Traveling the Jefferson Highway
August 6 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Sunday, August 6th at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum (110 N. Walnut St) in Maryville.
For the 100th anniversary of the Jefferson Highway that crossed western Missouri along its international route from Winnipeg, Canada, to New Orleans, retired museum director Michele Hansford will discuss how this early auto trail was designed to foster regional travel and tourism in the 1920s. Information taken from association publications, digitized documents, and local newspapers will highlight the highway’s impact on towns along its path such as St. Joseph, Kansas City, and Joplin, while also providing the story of its longtime promoter James D. Clarkson.
The program is free, but donations to the museum are always welcome.
