Bearcat Softball Gets DH Sweep Of Ichabods

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team swept of a doubleheader from the Washburn University Ichabods for the first time since 2016 at the Bearcat Softball Field.

Northwest won the opener, 4-2, and came back to win the nightcap, 7-5. Northwest moves its mark to 16-18 overall and 10-12 in MIAA play, whlie Washburn falls to 23-10 overall and 9-7 in league play.

GAME ONE
Hannah Blackford tallied three hits and Madison Friest belted two home runs as Northwest scored a 4-2 win over Washburn.

Kaitlyn Weis delivered her only hit of the day in the first inning as she drove home Olivia Daugherty to give Northwest a 1-0 lead.

Washburn tied it up with a run in the top fo the second.

Friest ripped a solo home run to left field to lead off the fourth inning and give Northwest a 2-1 lead. Blackford delivered a two-out, RBI single that scored Grace Jeffries later in the fourth.

Washburn cut Northwest’s lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth.

Friest unloaded again in the top of the sixth with another leadoff homer to center field to put Northwest on top 4-2.

Head coach Ryan Anderson turned to Weis to get the final six outs of the game. Weis came through for the save that allowed starter Breck Dickey to pick up her sixth win of the season. Dickey worked five innings and allowed two runs (one earned), while striking out two.

Weist gave up one hit in two innings of work.

GAME TWO
Washburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to have Northwest rally with a six-run fifth inning en route to a 7-5 victory.

Washburn scored an unearned run in the third and added a pair on a run-scoring single to center in the fifth. Hayden Simmons relieved starter Raven Defrain with two on and two out in the fifth. Simmons recorded a strikeout to end the Washburn threat.

The Bearcats sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth and picked up six runs. Olivia Daugherty clocked a two-run shot to right to get the scoring underway. Friest leveled the score at 3-3 with an RBI single to left that scored Kaitlyn Weis. Ady Watts delivered a sacrifice fly to left to plate Abby Nolte and put the Bearcats on top, 4-3. Grace Jeffries and Blackford kept the runs coming with singles and Northwest had a 6-3 lead following the six-run, six-hit outburst in the fifth.

Daugherty added an insurance run in the sixth when she led off with a towering homer to left-center.

Washburn’s Ashton Friend greeted Simmons with a two-run homer in the seventh to cut the Northwest lead to 7-5. Weis came on and worked around two singles to record her second save of the day and fifth of the season.

Simmons got the win to improve to 4-1.

Nolte went 3-for-4 with a runs scored in the second game.

The Bearcats will wrap up the regular season next weekend with a doubleheaders at Missouri Southern (April 30) and at Pittsburg State (May 1).
