For the first time since 1997, the Northwest Missouri State University men’s cross country team is ranked in the top 20 by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Bearcat men’s team checks in at No. 19 in the nation in this week’s USTFCCCA poll.

“We are really excited about the start of the season and being nationally ranked,” Bearcat coach Nick Gibson said. “We worked extremely hard to recruit the best team and these guys wanted be a part of our vision for Northwest Cross Country. We had a strong core of returnees with Karim Achengli, Jacob Norris and Tucker Dahle that provided a great foundation for a national-caliber team.”

Earlier this week, Northwest was ranked No. 4 in the USTFCCCA Central Region rankings.

Northwest competed in the Bearcat Open on Sept. 6 and scored 16 team points to win the event. Achengli took first-place honors with a time of 22:15.74.

The Bearcats will take the road this Saturday and compete in the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Missouri.
