The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team had hoped to open its home season this weekend but instead will move the three-game set vs. Missouri Southern to Joplin, Missouri.
The Bearcat Field outfield is still too damp to compete on and as a result the games will be moved to Warren Turner Field in Joplin.
Friday’s series opener is set for 6 p.m. Saturday’s second game will begin at 2 p.m. The series finale on Sunday will start at 1 p.m.
The Bearcats (10-12, 6-6 MIAA) are coming of a series loss to Pittsburg State March 15-17. During the matchup with the Gorillas, junior first baseman Conner Quick and senior catcher Alixon Herrera extended their hitting streaks to three games apiece.
Thus far, Northwest has continued to rely on aggressive hitting and control the No. 5 slot in the MIAA in team batting average (.269). Missouri Southern currently sits in the No. 2 spot with a .293 team batting average.
Herrera is tied for fifth across the conference in doubles (8).
Quick continues to lead Bearcat starters in individual batting average, hitting .338 with 27 hits on the season in 80 at bats. He also has hit a team-high homeruns (2).
Junior pitcher Quinten Van Ackeren leads the Bearcats with 26 strikeouts, allowing 26 runs on 47 hits in 37.1 innings pitched. Fellow junior pitcher Joe Funkhouser is second on the Bearcats roster with 30 strikeouts.
Missouri Southern (19-6, 10-2 MIAA) comes into the matchup with Northwest coming off an 11-10 win over Southwest Baptist.
