Iowa SOS Seeks Campaign Money After Story On Side Business

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is asking supporters for campaign money to fight what he calls “fake news” about a side business he didn’t disclose on an ethics filing.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Pate organized the PRG Group, LLC, days before the 2016 presidential election. Pate and his wife have used the corporation to develop a storage business and purchase a strip mall.

Pate recently called himself the corporation’s “managing partner,” but he didn’t list it on a disclosure form that asked him to name each business in which he was engaged in 2017. He says he believes he didn’t have to because he reported receiving rental income from unspecified real estate properties.

In a fundraising email Wednesday, Pate said that, “anyone who can read can see that I accurately recorded my filing!” He says he’ll have to spend “additional campaign resources” combating the story.
